- Gob On The Tyne (working title!)
The North East Punk scene 1976-1980
Gob On The Tyne' chronicles many of the bands from the North East's first wave of Punk and includes photos, articles, discographies, memorabilia and interviews with some of the major names as well as the also-rans, plus various nuggets gleaned along the way. - 1976 saw a revolution in music, fashion and culture. A new generation of kids who'd been raised on a diet of blandness grew tired of being force-fed the same old garbage year in, year out. Originally influenced and motivated by bands of the '60s / '70s such as The Stooges, New York Dolls and The Ramones in the US and Pub Rock bands Dr. Feelgood and Eddie & The Hot Rods in the UK, disaffected youth all over the UK , kick started by the Sex Pistols in 1975, started forming their own bands, begging, stealing and borrowing whatever gear they could lay their hands on.
Bands sprang up over night, making their voices heard and causing the dinosaurs of yesteryear to pack up their flares, patchouli and joss sticks and run for the hills. Unemployment, not to mention boredom, apathy and alienation were high in the UK in the mid '70s, none more so than the North East where the Sex Pistols cry of no future was the stark reality for many, which made it the perfect spawning ground for Punk to flourish, and flourish it did. Bands such as Penetration, Angelic Upstarts, The Big G and Blitzkrieg Bop led the way, followed in their wake by the likes of The Condemned, The Proles and Murder The Disturbed (to name a few) as well as Prog Punks such as Punishment Of Luxury and Crawling Chaos. Oh, and not forgetting the legendary Dog Dirt featuring Bob Mortimer, later to attain TV fame as one half of Vic & Bob.
'I was sitting in a pub in Newcastle in 1976 when somebody put a record on the jukebox that changed everything. The track was 'Anarchy In The UK.' The band was the Sex Pistols. I was thrilled there was a movement whose prime motivation seemed to be 'wreck and destroy,' and I bought into it with the zeal of a religious convert, but my 'FUCK OFF!' T-shirt was a statement too far for most of the pubs on Tyneside!' Jimmy Nail
'Gob On The Tyne' will be approx 100 pages (paperback) in an edition of 1,000 - 2,000 (depending on costs.) It is a non-profit project. It will be distributed throughout the North East via local newspapers, music and book shops.
We've made a start and would like as much input from anyone who was involved in any way with the NE Punk scene '76 - '80 (whether in a band or if you ran a fanzine or were simply a fan) with information, stories, anecdotes, quotes, photos, reviews, memorabilia (scans of fanzines, press clippings, flyers, posters, tickets, etc.) Anything at all relating to the NE Punk explosion!
Of course, all contributors will be credited.

Here is a list of all the bands / artists, fanzines, labels and venues we are aware of, if you know of others please let us know.
* Denotes not strictly Punk. Curiously the only bands to fall under this category are those fronted by none other than Sting, Jimmy Nail and Annie Lennox! The Police's debut 7" 'Fall Out' could be classed as Punk and Jimmy Nail's Pub Rock band King Crabs had something of a reputation, not least due to the fact that he often wore a dress on stage! The Tourists started as a Punk band but quickly became 'New Wave.'
